Crushed Minerals

Why did Purple Door Alchemy start crushing its own minerals?

At Purple Door Alchemy, we believe in providing the highest quality products to our customers. We started crushing our own minerals to ensure superior quality control, better pricing, and complete transparency. Many crushed minerals on the market are color-enhanced using dyes, often without disclosure. By crushing our own minerals, we guarantee that our products are natural and authentic.

What makes your crushed minerals superior to your competitors'?

Our crushed minerals stand out for several reasons:

  • Quality Control: We carefully select and crush our minerals to maintain their natural beauty and integrity, ensuring that you receive the best possible product.
  • Better Pricing: By crushing our own minerals, we can offer competitive prices without compromising on quality.
  • Superior Packaging: Unlike many competitors who use bags, we package our crushed minerals in sturdy jars. This not only protects the product from accidental spillage or bag rips but also makes it easier to use and store. Additionally, you can recycle our jars.
  • Transparency: We provide detailed information about the origin and properties of our minerals, ensuring you know exactly what you’re getting.

Are your crushed minerals dyed or color-enhanced?

No, our crushed minerals are not dyed or color-enhanced. We take pride in offering natural and authentic products. Many crushed minerals on the market are artificially colored without proper disclosure, but we guarantee the authenticity and purity of our minerals.

Which crushed minerals are commonly faked or dyed in the market?

Crushed minerals have gained immense popularity among makers, attracting the attention of overseas manufacturers. As a result, many of the crushed minerals now available on platforms like Etsy, eBay, and Amazon originate from countries such as India and China. These manufacturers often use dyes and artificial treatments to enhance the appearance of their products, compromising their authenticity and quality. Furthermore, bulk quantities of these fake minerals can be purchased through crystal vendors and are often repackaged and sold as if they were sourced and crushed in-house. This practice misleads consumers, who believe they are buying genuine, high-quality minerals. At Purple Door Alchemy, we are dedicated to maintaining transparency and integrity. We crush our own minerals to ensure they are natural and authentic, providing our customers with the highest quality products that retain their true beauty and metaphysical properties.

Several popular minerals are often faked or dyed to enhance their appearance or mimic more valuable stones. The most commonly affected minerals include:
  • Rose Quartz: Frequently dyed to achieve a more vibrant pink color. Authentic rose quartz has a gentle, natural pink hue that can vary in intensity.

  • Amethyst: Often heat-treated to enhance its purple color or even create artificial versions. Genuine Amethyst ranges from pale lavender to deep violet. When it is crushed it is a lavender color, in this form it is typically dyed to enhance the purple hue.

  • Citrine: Many Citrine stones on the market are actually heat-treated Amethyst or Smoky Quartz. True Citrine has a warm, golden-yellow color. When it is crushed it is a very pale yellow color, in this form it is typically dyed to enhance the yellow hue.

  • Smoky Quartz: Sometimes irradiated to darken its color. Natural Smoky Quartz has a range of shades from light gray to deep brown. When it is crushed it is a very light grey color, in this form it is typically dyed to enhance the smoky hue.

  • Turquoise: Frequently dyed to enhance its blue color, deliberatley mislabelled Chrysocolla or faked entirely by dying Howlite. Authentic Turquoise has a range of blue to green shades, often with natural matrix patterns.

  • Blue Apatite: When crushed it is often imitated by dying quartz. True Blue Apatite has a vibrant, blue green color that can be difficult to replicate.

  • Peridot: Sometimes mimicked by dyed quartz due to its distinctive lime green color. Authentic Peridot has a unique, olive-green hue that stands out and often contains some host rock.

  • Malachite: Frequently faked using dyed quartz or other green stones. Real Malachite has distinct, banded patterns in various shades of green, never clear or transparent, and never black.

These are just several of the most commonly faked or dyed minerals. It is not limited to just these minerals.

How do you ensure the quality of your crushed minerals?

We start with high-quality raw minerals, which are carefully selected for their natural beauty and properties. The crushing process is meticulously controlled to maintain the integrity of the minerals. Our packaging in jars further ensures that the product remains in excellent condition until it reaches you.

What are the benefits of using your crushed minerals?

Our crushed minerals are perfect for a variety of uses, including crystal grids, art projects, metaphysical practices, and more. The natural beauty and energy of our minerals can enhance your projects and spiritual practices, providing both aesthetic and energetic benefits.

How are your crushed minerals packaged?

We package our crushed minerals in durable jars, which offer superior protection compared to bags. This packaging method ensures that the minerals remain intact and are easy to use and store. Our jars also help prevent contamination and make it convenient to measure and dispense the minerals.

By choosing Purple Door Alchemy’s crushed minerals, you’re opting for quality, authenticity, and value. Experience the difference that our dedication to excellence can make in your projects and practices.

What style of Crushed Minerals do you offer?

We offer the Crushed Minerals in four styles: Powder, Sand, Coarse and Extra Coarse. In our processing, we use American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) sieves. The Crushed Minerals are sifted in these sieves and seperated by our uniquely designated styles. Here we explain the sizes of each style.

How much is 5 grams in ounces and how many teaspoons is that?

We often get questions as to how our sizes compare to baking measurements, and what is it in ounces. Below you will find an explanation of how much to expect. However, each style and the type of mineral could greatly skew the measurement. This chart was made for our Sand style. Please, keep in mind that we sell our Crushed Minerals by weight and not by volume, how much space it fills a jar. Some minerals are lighter in weight than others, while others are much heavier. An example is that Selenite is a very light weight mineral compared to Pyrite, and dense mineral. Selenite will fill up a jar more than Pyrite will. Regarless of the space in the jar they are the same weight. A 5 gram Selenite product will be the same weight as a 5 gram Pyrite product.

Fun Fact: Every US nickel weighs exactly 5 grams.

What's a gram?

A gram is a small metric measurement of mass (weight) that is one-thousandth of a kilogram. In Imperial measurements, the measurement that the USA uses, 1 gram is .035 ounces.

Fun fact: A US Dollar bill weighs 1 gram.

Why do you use the metric system?

The metric system is the international system of weights and measurments. It is used universally as a set standard for many industries such the the scientific communities, to manufacturing, and to the International Gem Society.

We find that it is much easier, and a lot more accurate, to price and sell our products using the metric system.

Fun fact: One carat is 1/5th of a gram.

Crystals

Are your crystals and minerals natural, and real?

Our crystals and minerals are real minerals. They are in their natural state unless otherwise noted. We do carry some manmade minerals and materials that will be called out as being manmade, a couple examples are: Terahertz Stone (Silicon) and Goldstone.

Most crystals and minerals on the market are treated to enhance the color. This is typically the case with Rose Quartz and Citrine. Rose Quartz goes through a radiation process or dyed to enhance the pink color. Citrine is often heat treated to enhance its yellow hue, or it is actually Amethyst that has been heated at high heat. Amethyst darkens to a dark, burnt orange and is typically sold as Citrine Geodes, chips, or raw specimens.

Other treatments used are to stabilize the mineral. Stabilizer coats the mineral so it is not as porous which prevents it from absorbing water, and to minimize breakage. This is typically used in the jewelry making process, but can also apply to spheres, tumbles, and slabs. Stabilizer is used to keep the integrity of a mineral and to prevent damage.

Are your crystals and minerals ethically sourced?

We have very close relationships with the mines, mine owners, and importers themselves. This allows us to be selective with who we work with and where our materials are sourced. Many of our suppliers own their own mine, process, and import their minerals. As an example, one of our big suppliers gives partial ownership of their mines to their workers, pay livable wages, and give back to the community. They do this through building schools, and building infrastructure to support the community.

When confict and war arise, such as what has happened in Afghanistan and the Ukraine War there are tarriffs in place to prevent certain materials from entering the USA from a country of origin. Most of the minerals and crystals such as Lapis Lazuli, Charoite and Shungite in the USA were imported prior to any conflict.

Gem Grading

Why doesn't Purple Door Alchemy grade crystals, gems, and minerals?

At Purple Door Alchemy, we believe in transparency and ethical practices. We do not grade crystals, gems, and minerals ourselves because we are not certified gemologists. It's essential to leave this expertise to qualified professionals who can accurately assess the quality and characteristics of these precious materials.

Do you ever include the grade of crystals and gems in your product descriptions?

If a crystal or gem arrives with a grading certificate from a reputable source, we may include this information in our product descriptions. We trust the grading scale used by certified gemologists who assessed the material before it came into our possession. However, there are many miners and distributors who will incorrectly give their products a higher grade to inflate the prices. We have knowledge of the grading scale, and when we see this practice we do not do business with those miners and vendors.

How can I trust the quality of your crystals and gems if they're not graded by you?

We source our crystals and gems from reputable suppliers known for their high standards. These suppliers often employ certified gemologists who meticulously grade the materials based on color, clarity, and other factors. This ensures that our customers receive products of consistent quality and authenticity.

Do you guarantee the authenticity of your crystals and gems?

Absolutely. We prioritize sourcing from trusted suppliers and rely on their expertise in gem grading. This commitment allows us to provide genuine products that meet our customers' expectations for quality and ethical sourcing.

Why do some competitors grade their minerals and gems?

Some competitors may grade minerals and gems to enhance perceived value or justify higher prices. However, without proper certification and expertise, there's a risk of inaccurate grading, which can mislead consumers. At Purple Door Alchemy, we prioritize honesty and trustworthiness by deferring to certified gemologists for this critical evaluation.

How can I be sure I'm getting a genuine product from Purple Door Alchemy?

Our dedication to ethical sourcing and transparency ensures that every crystal, gem, and mineral we offer is genuine and responsibly acquired. We stand behind our products with confidence, knowing they have been sourced and vetted with integrity.

All about Certified Gemologists

Who are certified gemologists?

Certified Gemologists are professionals trained in the science of gemology, which involves the study of gemstones, their origins, properties, and grading standards. They undergo rigorous education and practical training to accurately evaluate the quality, authenticity, and value of gemstones based on recognized industry standards.

What do certified gemologists do?

Certified Gemologists conduct detailed examinations of gemstones using specialized tools and techniques. They assess factors such as color, clarity, cut, and carat weight to determine a stone's quality and market value. Their expertise ensures that gemstones are graded accurately and ethically, providing consumers with reliable information about their purchases.

How do gemologists receive their certification?

Gemologists typically receive their certification through accredited gemological institutes or organizations such as the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) or the International Gem Society (IGS). Certification programs include comprehensive coursework, practical gemstone identification exercises, and examinations. Upon successful completion of these requirements, gemologists earn certification credentials that validate their expertise in the field of gemology.

Why trust certified gemologists for grading?

Certified Gemologists adhere to strict grading standards established by reputable organizations. Their impartiality and adherence to industry guidelines ensure that gemstones are evaluated consistently and accurately. By relying on certified professionals for grading, Purple Door Alchemy maintains the integrity of our products and provides customers with confidence in the quality and authenticity of our crystals, gems, and minerals.

Understanding Gemologists: Expertise and Distinctions

Gemologists are professionals specializing in the scientific study and evaluation of gemstones, distinct from other roles within the field of minerals and gems:

Gemologist:

Certified Gemologists are professionals trained in the science of gemology, which involves the study of gemstones, their origins, properties, and grading standards. They undergo rigorous education and practical training to accurately evaluate the quality, authenticity, and value of gemstones based on recognized industry standards.

Geologists:

Geologists study broader aspects of the Earth's structure, processes, and materials, including minerals and gemstone formation but with a different emphasis on geological formations and processes.

Miners:

Miners extract minerals and gemstones from the Earth. While they have firsthand knowledge of where and how gems are found, they may not specialize in gem identification or grading.

Rockhounds (Amateur Collectors):

Rockhounds, or amateur collectors, have a passion for collecting rocks, minerals, and gemstones as a hobby, often without the extensive training and knowledge of gemological principles. They are typically self taught through reseach and field study.

Jewelers:

Jewelers may consult with Gemologists for gemstone selection and verification but primarily focus on the artistic and technical aspects of jewelry making.

Gemologists play a crucial role in the accurate identification, grading, and appraisal of gemstones, leveraging their specialized knowledge and training to ensure quality and authenticity in the gemstone market. Their expertise distinguishes them from geologists, miners, rockhounds, and jewelers. Each contributes uniquely to the broader field of minerals and gems.

Geologists, miners, rockhounds and jewelers cannot accurately grade a mineral or gemstone like a certifited Gemologist.
